![]() ![]() Track 4 shines again as the obligatory ballad. AnimalĬompressed cleans, big, bouncy bass, and vocal processing galore on Love Bites. Rocket has everything that the modern, in 1987, fan of the Lep was looking for:ĭouble time pace pick-up at the end. Musicians, is Rocket a shuffle? I am unclear on this. But, stripped down to it's rock roots, it could have been on Pyromania, High 'n' Dry, or On Through the Night. Maybe not sonically, as the influence of ol' Mutt Lange is clearly on display here. It's a stretch, but I think Def Leppard could have put Women on any of their first albums. Here's a BBC interview on the history of the band. It's just all 5 members of Def Leppard doing gang choruses. The Bankrupt Brothers are the band within the band. Seriously, on the same web page Rolling Stone ranks a Hole album, a My Morning Jacket album, and an Amy Winehouse album ahead of Hysteria. There are at least 460+ albums on their list that aren't even close to the pure majesty of Hysteria. Rolling Stone ranked Hysteria at 464 on the 500 greatest albums of all-time. The album is perhaps Producer Mutt Lange's finest work. Just incredible.Īnd, if I recall correctly, Tear It Down off Adrenalize was supposed to be on Hysteria. You could say that trying to make every song a single is selling out, but what is wrong with that?Īlong with Appetite for Destruction, Hysteria released 7 singles. But can you argue with the results? The guys from DL shouldn't be blamed for creating a masterpiece. It probably upset some core fans who wanted to live in a High n Dry and On Through The Night world forever. Sonically, this album has something for everyone. Hysteria took forever to record, overset expectations, promised the world, and then absolutely delivered. Maybe it was because Def Leppard were a band in truest sense of the word, a bunch of kids who set out to make awesome rock tunes in their late teens and ended up succeeding. Maybe it was because they lacked someone like Desmond Child, Bon Jovi's lyrical and songwriting version of (his buddy) Bill Belichick's Ernie Adams. Maybe it was because they lacked true categorization. The funniest part about Def Leppard to me is how some people struggle to recognize their greatness. So many tracks, so many layers, so many overdubs, so many years to produce and subsequently release. This barrage of bad luck could make other bands break up, but it only galvanised the Sheffield rockers to get back in the studio with Mutt and finally finish Hysteria.Def Leppard’s Magnum Opus to Women (of the Champagne Room) Like Allen, Mutt wouldn’t be beaten and moved his hospital bed into the studio to continue work on the record. ![]() Shortly after Mutt Lange, back at the helm as producer, was in a car accident and had to stay in hospital for three weeks with critical leg injuries. Nearly exactly a year later front man Joe Elliott fell ill with the mumps and lost two stone. Thankfully, Allen survived and with admirable determination and unrivalled vision he would return to the band to play the drums. Tragedy struck on New Year’s Eve in 1984 when drummer Rick Allen crashed his Corvette Stingray, whilst driving with his girlfriend near Sheffield he was flung from the car and his left arm was severed by the seat belt. The first setbacks happened with Mutt Lange being unable initially to produce the album and the fruitless sessions with Jim Steinbeck, but much worse was still to come. The rest is history.ĭef Leppard’s previous album Pyromania took a short and sweet 9 months to make, whereas Hysteria took over three years to finish after a series of unfortunate events. Luckily in late 1985, a rested Mutt gave the band a call and said he was ready to come back. Then when he tried to have the carpet changed because he didn’t like the colour, that was the end of it”.įor a short time after, the band tried co-producing the album themselves with longtime studio engineer Nigel Green. Speaking to Louder, front man Joe Elliott explained: “He was thinking about Meat Loaf’s next album. Steinman and the Def Leppard had very different work ethics and the band ended up firing him they thought Steinman was more interested in redoing the studio’s decor and getting back to working with his beloved Loaf than producing their record. Unfortunately, when it came to recording Mutt bailed on the boys citing exhaustion, so the band recruited Meat Loaf Bat Out Of Hell producer, Jim Steinman, instead. The band started work on Hysteria with longstanding producer Robert ‘Mutt’ Lange, who’d added his production finesse to their two previous albums: 1981’s High ’n’ Dry and 1983’s Pyromania. Three producers worked on the record including the band themselves
